What’s happening

The 25th Annual Charity Regatta, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Howick and Half Moon Bay was held at Half Moon Bay Marina on Friday 16th March. The brilliant sunshine made for a great day on the water for the 32 yachts and crew who participated in this year's event, with the proceeds being raised to support the Child Cancer Foundation. The calm conditions at the start gradually gave way to a nice breeze so that the yachts were able to provide a more exhilarating ride for the crews, many of whom were complete novices.  The day began with brunch in the marquee, and an opportunity for the crews to get to know their yacht skippers. Rotary Past District Governor Ross Craig welcomed the participants, and gave a brief overview of Rotary's achievements since the inaugural Charity Yacht Regatta held in November 1987. Since then, $1.4 million has been raise through the annual event, and distributed to worthy charities. All Black, Jerome Kaino, was on hand to show his support for  children with cancer, and accompanied these youngsters on a boat trip to see the  start of the Regatta. Some other beneficiaries of funds
raised by the Yacht Regatta over the years include Polio Plus - a Rotary International project that is very close to eliminating polio worldwide, Starship Hospital children's playground, Life Education Trust - an organisation that teaches children the dangers of drugs, Middlemore Hospital's serious burns unit, and many more worthwhile charities. After the Regatta, the large gathering of yacht crews enjoyed a buffet dinner in the marquee, and generously bid for numerous items in the charity auction, which further helped to swell the coffers.
Howick Community Awards
A sell-out crowd of 230 filled Montressors Function Centre at Pakuranga United Rugby Club for a gala dinner on Tuesday, to see winners and runners-up of the Howick Community Awards accept their accolades.
The awards took on new significance this year as five Rotary clubs in the greater Howick area jointly organised the event, formerly known as the Howick Showcase Awards. It was expanded to reflect the new political boundaries of the Howick Ward and hosted by the combined Rotary Clubs

of Botany East Tamaki, Half Moon Bay, Howick, Pakuranga and Somerville Howick, in conjunction with the Howick Local Board.
Local board chairman Michael Williams welcomed the gathering, saying: “This year we are here as the ‘big Howick’, from Musick Point to Redoubt Road. “We’re the fifth largest urban area in New Zealand, right behind Hamilton. It’s great to have the opportunity to celebrate this event together.” The awards, he said, showed the importance of community.  “One-third of the population is involved in voluntary work and the average number
of hours per person is 10-11 a month. Our nation runs on volunteers. We need to thank them. They enrich our lives to a huge degree.”
More than 60 names were nominated for five award categories, each carrying a $1000 prize and plaque for the winners and a prize and certificate for the runners-up.
