The Koromiko garden is located on level three of Starship Hospital.
The name Koromiko was gifted through Starship’s Maori Health team.
The Koromiko shrub has small white flowers and has long been known for its medicinal properties.
The purpose of the garden is to provide an outdoor area where Starship patients and their families can relax away from the hospital wards.
The Starship Foundation charity is proud to have made this project come to life, through the support of the Rotary Club of Howick, as gardens are considered ‘non-essential’ in terms of core medical funding.
Starship is the children’s section of the Auckland Hospital.
Within the new garden there is a paved area with seating and also a grassed area for children to play on. The columns on the building are painted with fairy tales.
The Rotary Club of Howick is proud to have been able to help provide this facility
The garden was designed by secondary school student, Heather Penman, whose talents emerged through a school competition with the Ellerslie Flower show. The theme of the garden is New Zealand natives and fairy tales.

There is a Snow White cottage which is roofless and without walls to provide maximum sunlight, because sun is only in that area half the day. A vine will grow over it in time. The star shapes in the paving reflect the hospital’s name – Starship.
