History
The Probus Club of Howick was formed in 1983 on an initiative from members of the Pakuranga Men’s Probus Group.
An interest group meeting was held in the Fencible Lounge, Howick, with the help of the Mayor of Howick, Morrin Cooper and his council staff. A committee was formed, and the first President was Mr Sandy Saunders, and his Vice President was Mr Stan Joblin. The first meeting of the club was held at St Andrews Church Centre, Howick on the 10th June 1983 with 100 financial members present. The host Rotary Club was the Rotary Club of Howick. Since then the club has varied in strength, around the mid-nineties we had up to 170 members. Current membership is around 90 members, and we have approx. 65 members attend each meeting.
We offer an open invitation to Rotarians and other interested persons to visit us  and to participate in our meeting in order to enjoy the meeting and possibly to share some ideas with us that could be beneficial to all concerned.
Probus worldwide
Probus is an International organisation. Wherever there is a Rotary Club you will expect to find a Probus Club Some are combined clubs, some are purely men and some are for ladies only. However, like all clubs we would like to attract younger people to join us, and this is becoming difficult as people do not retire so early in life now. We are affiliated to the Australian Probus Association and have annual Rendezvous with them in either Australia or New Zealand. This year it is at the Barossa Valley in South Australia.
Howick Probus
Even though we are a men’s club, ladies are invited to come to our meeting, in fact we encourage them to visit us and take part in our meetings. We have occasional outings to interesting places, and we also go on theatre visits and have interest groups within the club.
