The transport back to Halfmoon Bay
Rotary Clubs in district 9920 select young people from all of the Pacific islands to attend a ‘Rota Pacific’ programme. The main aim of the programme is for the participants to develop leadership qualities and accept the responsibilities of good citizenship. It is also for participants to develop understanding between the countries of the South Pacific by allowing young people to meet and live together in a spirit of friendship. For the first two weeks the participants are hosted in the homes of Rotary members, living as part of that family. The programme includes seeing the sights of Auckland for a week, as well as taking part in a week of Work Experience in an industry related to that of each group member. In week three, the group will meet up with about 90 other similar-aged people from all walks of life, at the RYLA camp, in a programme of lectures and interaction regarding leadership in subjects of interest for young people. This is a great programme that seeks to improve leadership and communication skills and at the end of the week they will be qualified for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. The Rotary Club of Howick has a long involvement in Rota Pacific, having previously been under the Chairmanship of member Gavin Green for a number of years.
