A busy week even without our normal Tuesday meeting. On Monday 12 members joined with approximately 70 others to listen to an informative address from Ed Chignell, CEO of Predator Free 2050, the company created by the previous government to lead the eradication of predators throughout New Zealand. It was an enthralling presentation outlining not only the challenge but some of the major projects already underway.
And when I say major they are much bigger than the one envisaged for Howick. They include Taranaki and the farms surrounding the national park, Wellington City, Waiheke Island, Dunedin and a large number of others some of which are similar in scope to our local project. Those present included all local Rotary Clubs, schools and interested members of the public. There were a lot of questions at the end and there is obviously a lot of enthusiasm to get started.
Thanks to Allan Riley a start has been made with Howick Historical Village. Allan has met with staff and council advisors and is providing advice to assist them with their control program. What we need now is some members who are willing to become involved and help with tasks such as liaison with schools in our area to encourage them to become involved. A great educational opportunity and working for their own future.
