 President's Message

This week was a social meeting and a number of members and partners joined us at The Howick Club for wine tasting. This is a regular event at the Howick Club with a large group of enthusiastic members of their wine section. We were entertained and educated by the business manager of a major winery who regaled us with tales of his experiences selling various wines in different international markets. Cultural differences when it came to trying wine with potential buyers appeared to come at the cost of a significant number of brain cells! In total we sampled and enjoyed 6 wines. Note I said sampled which does not mean we consumed 6 glasses just in case you were wondering. A big thanks to our “Minister of Fun” John Savory for organising the night.

This coming week our guest speaker is Charles Lambert, a member of Nelson West Rotary club who is going to talk to us about Shelterbox which was set up by Rotary in the United Kingdom in 2000.
Right now around 85 million people around the world have been made homeless by natural disaster and conflict. Shelterbox is working to change this by providing emergency shelter and tools for families robbed of their homes by these tragedies. He may be joined by Jimmy Griffith who is a Shelterbox Team Response member who has recently returned from the Rohingya Refugee camp in Bangladesh. They will talk to us about the latest deployments and strategies being undertaken by Shelterbox worldwide.

This will be a good time to invite family and friends and particularly those interested in becoming members to hear about another great cause.

From the “Did you know file” – A recent study found that woman who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it!
