 President's Message

Anyone who wasn’t at Howick Rotary this week missed out on an outstanding young speaker.

Abhay Pandit is a year 13 student at Howick College who was sponsored by our club to attend the National Science & Technology Forum. Abhay is a credit to his family and his school. His presentation was very well presented and he shared the personal experience as he shared what interested him, how it influenced his thinking about his future and had a lot of fun at the same time. A YouTube video will give you a taste of the whole week including the vocational and recreational aspects of the forum. Once again we had a demonstration of how important and relevant our link with Howick College is because we were able to briefly share in his experience.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11th June and I am delighted to let you know that my friend Ashleigh Ali-Aziz will be our guest speaker. Ashleigh is an inspiring young women who has risen above a difficult start in life in Kurdistan spent eight years in a refugee camp in Pakistan before coming to New Zealand. She a masters degree in business and is working towards her PHD. She is very involved in the community including, as you would expect, supporting refugees as well as starting her own business. This is definitely a meeting to invite visitors including potential members. Please make a point of notifying David Owen well in advance if you are coming and who you are bringing as a guest. If you can’t be there please let David know as well room could be at a premium.

The board received Stuart Armstrong’s resignation this week. Stuart and Karen have been valued members of our Rotary family for many years and Stuart has made a major contribution to our club and community. Sadly age catches up with us all Stuart. We are better for your friendship and dedication.

Don’t let up on inviting potential members just because we have had our potential member night. We will be in a position to announce some new members shortly.

I saw a Maori proverb today. The translation could have been written for rotary:
“My success is not the work of one but the work of many.”
