A few members missing from our meeting this time with travel, health and surgery commitments. I wish everyone safe travels or speedy recoveries.
The presentation at this meeting was from our own Glenice Yeoman . Her thumbnail has been delayed several times for a variety of reasons so it was good to finally hear her very interesting story.
Her life’s journey has not always been plain sailing but a wonderful relationship with her very special dad has shaped her life and who she is today.
Born in Whakatane, her mother had a stroke when Glenice was very young, and as a result was severely disabled. Care facilities were not what they are today so her mother’s care was largely undertaken by Glenice and her dad. Living with a severely disabled person and seeing the challenges that were faced daily strongly influenced Glenice’s decision to build an Air B and B which is set up to accommodate people with even the most severe disabilities.
Glenice actually trained as an event manager and worked in that field for a number of years but her early dream was to be an architect. While this ambition was not fulfilled, her interest and passion were a huge advantage in developing her home into her business with a beautiful outdoor area complete with pool.
The “can do” attitude of her dad (he built a mobility scooter for her mum when they were simply not available) has rubbed off on Glenice as she overcame not only the challenges of developing the structural buildings, but the bureaucracy of IRD and Auckland City Council with misinterpretations of GST and the concept of the business and delays with the code of compliance. In the end there was significant financial cost to Glenice, not just in meeting external costs but delays meant no income stream. ACC placing a family, one of whom has severe disabilities, in her accommodation has given her an income stream, but the extension by ACC of the timeline for the family to stay has not been without issues and Glenice is really looking forward to the day when she can get her home back and her business and really get started on the next stage of her life’s journey. It is very apt indeed that given the challenges faced and overcome that her business is called Attitude !
Her involvement with our club activities reflects her zest for life and her commitment to making a difference to the community. Welcome to Howick Rotary Glenice.
Matching books with people appear to be a real strength of our sergeant Bill Charkow, finding some very interesting books for some very interesting people at a very reasonable cost!
David Teape announced the return of Dine Out, a very popular announcement, Good Home on Easter Sunday will be the place to be.
Please remember if you are not coming to a meeting you need to apologize to David Owen. You will be charged for your meal as the caterer operates on numbers given.
