Another week with lots to talk about. Lets start with Bookarama. By the time the clean-up was finished on Sunday afternoon about 5pm and we all sat down for some well deserved “refreshment” and Colin Monk told us that we had achieved the highest total for the past 10 years which is an outstanding effort by all concerned.
In particular our thanks go to Heather and John Savory who have lead the whole project. In discussion with John we estimated that in excess of 500 man (person) hours went into Bookarama! To everyone involved your reward is knowing that we will put those funds to good use by making a difference to individuals, our community and international Rotary projects.
Last Tuesday was a fun night at Howick Rotary with an opportunity to relax and enjoy one another’s company after the exertions of Bookarama. We had a night at the movies. It started with socialising as per normal followed by pizza and ice cream for dinner. Before we sat down to our movie I was pleased to give Heather and John vouchers for a meal at Basalt as a gesture of thanks from us all for their commitment to Bookarama.
We then enjoyed an old fashioned night at the movies that took us back to our youth. It started with God save the Queen so everyone except my “Irish republican” wife stood. Next we had newsreels extolling the wonder of the first air mail between New Zealand and Australia. Amazingly it was only an 11 hour flight! The main feature was the original Casablanca in black and white with all those famous lines such as “Here's looking at you, kid.” Of course we had half time and another ice cream to add to the popcorn we enjoyed earlier. It was a fun night. The only negative was that we only had 28 people including partners.
Our "popcorn girl"
This coming Tuesday we are hosting District Governor Ingrid Waugh who will provide us with an update on what is happening in district 9920 since she took over earlier this year. This is a partner and friends invited event and I ask you all to welcome Ingrid and other visitors for the evening.
For all you Queen fans there is to be a special screening of “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the Monterey Theatre on Friday 2nd November. This is to support End Polio Now. Tickets are $25. See Geoff Thompson to book your place. This is a joint function with Sommerville and Pakuranga clubs and should be a good social occasion.
Enjoy your Labour weekend and if you are travelling come home safely.
